I was really torn writing Part 1 of this.
Because my strong opinion is in line with Naval’s thinking:
“Great people change you, not by expectation but by inspiration.”
That would be my preferred way to do it on a long timeline. If I coached players for 4 years in college or all the way from 12-18 through a hockey academy, I would continue to double down on the way of inspiration and positive reinforcement. But like my girlfriend has been teaching me through her dog training career, if you only use positive reinforcement, you need “a fuck ton of time.”
If you need to help someone in 2 days or 2 months, your approach can’t strictly be inspiration only in the majority of cases. We talked about this in Part 1. In Part 2, we will discuss my preferred method. Having a huge runway with your players.
Will you be able to reach some kids sooner than others and inspire them on Day 3?
Yes, in rare cases.
How do I know?
