Here goes Drew, dismantling a cliché again… In 3,2,1…
You may have been told to have a “bias towards action.”
“Make things happen out there.”
“Be a go-getter.”
“Don’t be lazy.”
Or whatever else you’ve been programmed with around this idea.
You know what this bias towards action has lead to in coaching?
Bad coaches.
Coaches that don’t make an impact.
Coaches that create so much noise that there is no signal to be found.
A bias towards action in our profession leads to this…
A kid fuck’s up on one rep and you have to say something.
One turnover regardless of if it was an execution or choice mistake… Gotta tell him…
Shooting technique a half an inch off from what you believe to be optimal… Say something…
If you’re this coach for long enough… Your players check out until the year is over… And then they leave.
Unlearn your bias towards action and replace it with a bias toward impact:
Getting your players to the show means you can’t “be the show.”
Impact over “acting.”
