ROB Shots and Their Hockey Remix
In the book, Transforming Basketball, the author speaks to shot selection. Like some hockey people, some basketball people are becoming aware of shot quality and how to create a high-value shot… Because not all shots are created equal. (In basketball, some are worth more points)
ROB is an acronym that stands for:
R- In Range (If you’re not a 3-point shooter, don’t huck one up from there)
O- Open (separate from defenders, use picks, off-ball screens, etc to shoot UN-contested)
B- Balanced (a quality shot is not one fading away from the basket or off one leg if you’re ‘getting open’)
What is the hockey remix that my brain came up with?
S-O-O Shot Selection
I wanted to use ‘House’ as the first letter, but that might have gotten me booted from the 10u team. So we exchanged ‘house’ for ‘slot’. (The first iteration was H-O-R Shot…) 2nd iteration:
S = Slot: almost every goal is scored here
O = Open: echos the above idea to work to get open away from the puck
O = Off-pass: encompasses: tips (shot-pass), one-timers, catch-and-shoot, rebounds (pass-off-pad)
Compound to Increase Quality
If you use every letter, chances are the shot will be of the highest quality.
Shots from the slot you won’t pass up.
Shots from the slot, off a pass are better but it might be rushed or contested.
Open shots from the slot are even better.
The best shot quality?
Maybe call the opening clip from Sioux City a SOO++.
When you add a change of side and a deceptive pass, you compound the quality further.
(pun not intended but very much present)
