Every coach thinks he’s secure.
Most coaches would say they are secure.
Few coaches are secure.
Power laws are a thing for a reason:
This post is not about power laws.
This post is about insecurity and its opposite.
I love secure leaders. And secure leaders aren’t hiding.
You’ll find them on podcasts, you’ll find them sharing at conferences or writing a Substack.
The point is you can find them.
Power doesn’t hide because Power knows there are no secrets. Everyone is capable of knowing everything a person has ever done.
Power knows that if it tells you everything about the machine they produce players with or the offense they run, you won’t be able to replicate the system and you won’t be able to stop their offense.
“Most cooks try to learn by making dishes. Doesnt mean you can cook. It means you can make that dish. When you can cook is when you can go to a farmers market, buy a bunch of stuff, then go home and make something without looking at a recipe. Now youre cooking.”
-Tom Colicchio
There’s a D1 coach that’s had some success in the last few years that fits this Podcast Razor to the point that he could have written it himself.
Here are some quotes he’s dropped to everyone who will listen.
“I’m not giving away any secrets here but we do run a 2-1-2 forecheck which means…” (proceeds to explain in detail)
“You can try to take away what we do well in OZP but you won’t. Cut the top on us and we will bypass with use of our F3. Play to protect the house and shade towards F3 more and we will play direct to the SSD. Either way, we are getting the puck up top because we want to generate high zone offense.”
Power knows that even if you know everything about the opponent, they are still confident you either:
Still will not stop them
The staff and players will make one, two or 10 layers of adjustment to beat you
For this reason, they open-source everything.
For this reason, they are secure.
Power doesn’t hide, which means you’ll know Force when you (don’t) see it.
