Dear New Wave Coach,
I’m writing to you on the night before my book, The Wave comes out. To all of you that have been attracted to my work, this book will resonate with you. There are a few stories that my avid readers will remember reading a similar version of, but most of the book is brand new material that has not been written about in the newsletter.
Most of the book is told through hockey stories, however, I think I’ve included an anecdote from every major sport. And after talking to many of the non-hockey coaches in this newsletter, the problems in hockey organizations and with hockey leaders aren’t unique to our sport. This is a sporting organization and leadership book told from the perspective of a hockey coach.
My intention with teasing some of the book is not to piss you off when you recognize a few of the stories. I put out posts and pieces of the book over the last 2 years to gauge how people felt about some of the ideas, to elicit feedback, and to talk to the coaches that have reached out about those ideas to improve upon them. It was intentional. I’ve made the individual posts better by expanding upon them, clarifying the messaging, and have blended them back into the book with your help. You’ve built on top of my original work, then I’ve built on top of your feedback and conversations with me. Again modeling one of the tenets of the book, playing an infinite game.
A lot of the readers of this newsletter have found their way into the book too. In true New Wave fashion, we’ve written the book together. You have collaborated with me knowingly or unknowingly and I thank you for that.
Thank you for the comments, the push-back, the sharpening of ideas, and the conversations and the quotes to begin every chapter.
I have met many new and great people along this 2-year journey to bring you this book and build the New Wave newsletter platform that will compound year after year.
When I get back into coaching, I’ll still be writing and connecting with all of you, and after you read this book over the next few days or weeks, I hope you’ll recommend it to someone that isn’t in our community and bring them in. We truly are a growing movement, there is a wave coming, and being in this community, I truly believe you’re ahead of what’s coming. That gives you an advantage.
