Another reason we think ‘Force Coaching’ works is not being able to see through the following illusion:
Players didn’t get better because they were yelled at, thrown into lines and did rout drills when I was growing up.
The reason we had creativity and IQ despite doing the ‘Full Ice Wisconsin’ for hours on end was because we played 3 hours of street hockey a day in front of our house.
Now the street hockey is gone and the hours of the flow drills at youth practices remain, guess what has gone with the wind like the street hockey?
Hockey IQ
Creativity
Skill playing in 2v2, small area situations, etc
Why?
The play is gone off the ice.
Which is why CLA is being beaten into the young coaches today…
We didn’t develop guys like Kariya, Datsyuk and Matthews because they had really good structure in their formal practices… Well, Datsyuk’s youth coach had it figured out actually:
The 90’s Kid Razor is simple to follow:
Assume you can’t coach the same way because the street hockey culture is dead
What you were doing didn’t ‘work’ anyway. It is just being exposed now because there is no play away from the rinks to develop the players.
