I’m on a mental models kick.
I first learned about this one from Brett Bartholomew. Brett is a performance coach and has created a company called Art of Coaching. If you’re new to his stuff, check him out. You won’t regret it for a second.
He talks about experience vs. exposure.
Other people use the mental model of maps vs. terrian.
They both mean the same thing.
One we think is a learning environment, one that actually is the learning environment.
Exposure and maps are the same.
Experience and terrain are synonymous too.
Exposure is watching New York City traffic.
Experience is driving in it.
Maps are a shitty internship where you get to watch the coach who coaches the training session.
Terrain is a great internship where you get to coach the athletes yourself and review your performance after with the head strength coach.
And as Bo Burham says, “two examples is enough.”
The problem is oftentimes we think we are getting deep, rich learning from the map.
However, the reality is…
Too much information, not enough application.
Questions for the Week:
Where are you using too many maps in your life?
And how can you get out in the elements yourself and challenge yourself in the terrain?
If you’re sick of the information overload and would like to apply ideas to grow and develop into the greatest future self possible. We get you into the terrain of life with The Workbook.
