Oh no, Drew’s about to talk about dog training again…
Want a story about Young Drew? Of course you do. Here it goes.
When I was in college, I used to stress-test the above tweet in another lab.
With girls…
At bars or on the sidewalk outside of bars, if I passed a pretty girl, my thing was to go up to her and say, “I love you.” (I didn’t drink in college, so this was done sober, I knew full well what I was doing)
This is not an invitation to “date your players” so don’t cancel me out of context.
The lesson is in timing.
I was moving too fast with the girl.
Bad dog trainers that can’t build a relationship with the dog first, by taking it slow, will not maximize the dog’s behavioral potential. They might not get any results at all.
If you’re moving too fast as a coach, you may never impact your player.
If the girl is turned off by the message before you even introduce yourself, it’s over.
If the dog checks out before there is “buy-in” it’s over.
Get buy-in before they check-out.
Relationship first.
Slow down.
