Mental Models: Guiding Principle
Elon Musk
Jeff Bezos
Stand-alone names in this era of business.
How many decisions do you think they make per day?
The answer is probably bigger than 12.
But what if I told you they filtered every decision through one filter?
Would that surprise you?
They have one guiding principle for their life. One.
For as big as they are and for as much as they do, they have simplified their system to one question.
Can you?
Should you?
Will you?
For Mr. Musk, it’s simple, “will this get me nearer to Mars?”
If the answer is yes, we do it.
For Bezos, “will this improve the customer experience?”
If yes, we do it every time, no matter the cost.
Coming up with one guiding principle can help you illuminate your path, so you can stay on it and reach the outcomes you want.
Perhaps you might try:
Does this get me closer to playing: at my dream D1 school, the NHL, etc?
Or maybe it’s
Does this make me a better version of me?
Is this something future me will thank me for doing?
Try to come up with your guiding principle, write it down on paper, and tape it to your wall. Look at it when you wake up and go to bed. Check-in with yourself on how it’s going each day.
