Generate the energy you need for the situation you’re in.
If you can consistently generate your own energy and model that behavior, you can decide to take responsibility for someone else and help them elevate theirs when lacking.
Leadership
Leadership is taking responsibility for someone other than yourself.
I challenge my guys when they consistently model certain behaviors to try to, “bring someone else with them.”
Tim Kight lays that out simply as, “go on a journey and take others with you.”
If one of your players is a model of consistency and standard in terms of behavior, why not employ them on the mission to create a better team?
Not everyone wants to be a leader, and they don’t need to be. But if you tell them:
This is what I’m seeing out of you
It’s exactly what I want in terms of x,y,z
Would you be willing to have a few conversations with guys about this and try and move the needle with them?
If you have enough trust built, they’ll tell you the truth. It will either be:
Yeah coach, absolutely
You know I don’t think I’m really comfortable with that.
Or something in-between
Start with Observation
Observe your players.
Find out who is a model of certain behaviors you want to see more of.
Ask them to help.
Creates conditions for:
More peer to peer conversations
More peer to peer feedback
Players helping each other grow
Real leadership reps
Potential difficult conversations
Homework
Find one player on your team that models a certain behavior you want to see in the team.
Tell him how awesome he is at that.
Ask for his help getting someone else on board.
