If you haven’t seen the new Top Gun movie that was just released… Set a date to do so.
There are zero spoilers in this article, just 2 things ideas that keep coming up in my life in different forms. I’ll share one this week and one next week in Part 2.
“I’m right where I’m supposed to be.”
This quote was uttered by Maverick in the film. 36 years ago he was a Top Gun graduate. He was given the rank “Captain” by the Navy.
When given an assignment to “teach” after getting into some trouble with the Navy, he finds himself back in the place where it all started. Top Gun school near San Diego.
Upon returning, old friends ask what he’s up to?
The common question… Why are you still “Captain” Mitchell? All of the people from your graduating year are “Admiral” or “Commander” they have high-ranking leadership positions, why are you still a pilot?
His response is a profound one.
“I’m right where I’m supposed to be.”
What does that mean?
We could all take a lesson from Maverick on this one. He isn’t concerned with “outside perception” of his “rank.” He only cares about what he cares about… He loves what he does.
The next rank is often filled with:
More job roles(things to do)
More leadership(people to look after)
More bullshit(bureaucracy, status signaling, red tape, etc)
