I used to think incentive structures, were this “pie in the sky” thing that really smart people wrote articles about. They made it really complex and I never could mentally “get near” the concept.
They did what bad coaches do. Make things harder by masking their lack of truly knowing by using really complex language.
Losers game.
Then my girlfriend got her masters in a field she didn’t want to be in, randomly applied to be a dog trainer, and landed a job.
My life changed. My coaching changed.
The only bad thing was… she took that job 2 years too late.
See the biggest frustration in my first HC job with the junior team was running into a situation where I didn’t have the tools to solve it.
No tools made me feel helpless. Like a plumber showing up at a job site without what is required to solve his shitty situation.
The only thing I could do some days was throw my hands up and say, “what the fuck.”
