Luke Gromer is the founder of The Coaches Club. I recently found his work and this tweet and podcast episode with Doug Lemov has spurred some thoughts.
The two quotes from Doug’s tweet about “intensity” scream “signaling” to me.
For starters let’s define signaling.
Signaling- transmit information or instructions by means of a gesture, action, or sound.
Sounds innocent enough… But if you’ve read Alchemy by Rory Sutherland, signaling looks different to you.
Signaling is about you. Like the peacock that flares it’s feathers… Signaling screams, “look at me!”
Signaling is done for people that don’t matter. When a coach is screaming on the bench, he’s often doing it to signal to those watching that “he cares.”
